Ingredients

  • 2.68 lbs Beef Chuck Roast
  • 1/4 cup Onion chopped
  • 2 tbsps garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger chopped
  • 1/4 cup rice cooking wine
  • 1/2 cups soy sauce
  • 1 cube beef bouillon
  • 5 pieces star anise
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil

Cornstarch Slurry

  • 2 tbsps cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

How to Cook Beef Pares in the Instant Pot Duo

  • Place the inner pot in the Instant Pot and press the sautee button setting. You can set it to the thirty-minute timer and the temperature on HI. Add the cooking oil and brown the garlic. Cook the onion until transparent and add the beef. Brown on all sides and push the meat at one edge of the pot. Add the bouillon and crush it. Mix it with the meat. Add the soy sauce, star anise, and water. Cover with the pressure cooker lid and press the pressure cooker button. Set the temperature on HI and set the timer to thirty minutes.
    When done, quick release and change setting to sautee. Mix the water and cornstarch until smooth. Add the cornstarch slurry into the meat, and mix until thick in consistency.
    Note that you can season this meal according to your liking. Add more soy sauce or sugar if you like.

Cook Beef Pares Stove Top

  • Place a large cooking pan on the stove. Heat the cooking oil and brown the garlic and cook the onion until transparent. Add in the beef and brown to all sides and add water. Start with two cups of water and let the meat cook on low heat for one hour. Add more water if needed.
    When the beef is soft and tender, add soy sauce, and star anise. Let it boil for fifteen more minutes.
    Make the cornstarch slurry: Mix the slurry ingredients and mix until there are no lumps. Add into the meat and cook on low heat until it reaches a thick consistency. Make sure that you season the meat according to your liking. Add more soy sauce if you like.
