Introducing Dinner Rolls from Scratch: A Simple and Delicious Recipe
We never had an oven back home in the Philippines, so baking bread hadn’t crossed my mind until now. I have been making bread to save money and improve my budgeting. Making bread from scratch is way cheaper in the long run.
Aside from saving reason, there is nothing quite like the aroma of freshly baked bread filling your home, especially when it comes to homemade dinner rolls. Soft, pillowy, and golden brown on the outside, these rolls make the perfect addition to any meal. Whether hosting a special occasion or looking to elevate a weeknight dinner, making dinner rolls from scratch is a straightforward and rewarding process.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Water
- Quick Rise Yeast
- Bread Flour
- Sugar
- Salt
- Unsalted Butter
How to Make Dinner Rolls From Scratch
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: Start Mixing the Dry Ingredients In a small bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
- Make the Dough: Place the water in a small bowl and microwave until warm to the touch. You can also simmer the water on low heat instead of microwaving.
- Knead the Dough. Attach the bowl to the stand mixer and attach the hook. Turn for ten seconds and slowly add the water. Once the dough forms, add the butter. Mix for fourteen minutes.
- First, rise and spray the bowl with nonstick oil. Form the dough into a ball and put the prepared dough in the bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise warmly for one hour or until it has doubled.
- Shape the Rolls: Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Turn the dough onto a flat surface and flatten it to one centimeter thick. Divide the dough, as shown above, into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion to a crescent shape.
- Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes or until they’ve puffed up and filled the baking dish. While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the Rolls: Once the rolls have risen, brush them with egg, place the baking dish in the oven, and bake for 15 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the rolls sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter for a shiny finish. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. These rolls are best served warm and fresh!
Tips for Perfect Dinner Rolls
- Room-Temperature Ingredients: To help the dough rise properly, ensure your butter is at room temperature. Cold ingredients can slow down yeast activation.
- Don’t Overwork the Dough: Knead the dough enough to bring it together. Over-kneading can result in dense rolls.
- Keep the dough Warm: Yeast loves warmth. If you’re not in a warm climate, you can create a warm environment by placing the dough in an oven preheated to 200°F and then turned off.
- Customize Your Rolls: Add herbs like rosemary, thyme, or garlic for an extra layer of flavor. You can also sprinkle cheese on top before baking for a cheesy twist.
How to Store Homemade Dinner Rolls
My family loves dinner rolls, so I always make a huge batch. I store them this way to maintain their taste and freshness.
- After baking, I transfer the dinner rolls to a baking tray to avoid moisture underneath. Once cooled, I place them in a tightly sealed container and let them sit at room temperature.
- I also freeze my dinner rolls. I follow the process aove, t I freeze them in a ziplock instead of a container. If I am about to eat them, I let them thaw at room temperature.
