Why You Should Make Homemade Yogurt (And How to Do It)
I am not a big Yogurt fan because I thought they were sour, too sweet, and outright sweet until I learned how to make it from scratch. I am now a big yogurt fan. And I make it every week now. My yogurt recipe consists of only three ingredients, and with the use of an Instant Pot, making it is a breeze. Let me share with you why you will love making Yogurt at home.

- Simpler Than You Think-Making yogurt at home is not some complex science experiment. It only requires a handful of ingredients and a bit of patience. The base is just milk and a small amount of plain yogurt with live cultures (which you can find in most grocery stores). The hardest part? Waiting for it to set! After that, you are left with creamy, tangy goodness you can enjoy on your terms. Once you get the hang of it, you might never return to store-bought again.
- Control Over Ingredients– When you make yogurt at home, you know exactly what goes into it. Many store-bought yogurts contain added sugars, preservatives, and artificial flavors. By creating your own, you can customize it to suit your taste and dietary needs, whether skipping the sugar, adding fresh fruit, or experimenting with different kinds of milk (from dairy to plant-based). Plus, you are avoiding the plastic waste from single-use containers!
- Healthier-Homemade yogurt is full of live probiotics that benefit your gut health. These good bacteria can help improve digestion, boost your immune system, and promote overall wellness. Many store-bought yogurts may contain fewer active cultures or, sometimes, none. By making it yourself, you can ensure that your yogurt is packed with the most beneficial bacteria to keep you feeling your best.

- More Affordable: Buying yogurt regularly can get expensive, especially if you purchase high-quality, organic brands. Making yogurt at home can save you money in the long run, as a gallon of milk can yield several batches of yogurt, depending on how much you make each time. The initial investment in a yogurt starter (or a small container of plain yogurt for your first batch) is minimal, and once you have a good rhythm, you will realize just how cost-effective homemade yogurt can be.
- You Can Experiment with Flavors-Homemade yogurt gives you the freedom to get creative. Want a honey-lavender flavor? Or a swirl of fresh berries? You can infuse your yogurt with anything you like! The process also allows for greater texture control. Whether you prefer thick and creamy yogurt or light and airy, you can adjust the setting time to achieve your ideal consistency.
- Satisfaction in the Process-There is something gratifying about making yogurt from scratch. Watching milk turn into yogurt through the simple fermentation process connects you to the food you consume. You get to participate in a tradition that has been around for centuries— the payoff is incredibly satisfying when you take that first spoonful of your homemade creation.

How to Make Yogurt at Home
Ingredients for this Homemade Yogurt Recipe
- Pasteurized Milk Fairlife
- Sweetened condensed Milk
- Yogurt Powder

Directions
- Pour the milk into the Instant Por Inner Pot- in this recipe, we don’t need to pre-boil the milk since it has been pasteurized.
- Add the condensed milk and the yogurt powder. Ensure that the milk and the condensed milk are incorporated. I do this by mixing them vigorously so that they form bubbles.
- Transfer the yogurt to the container, or leave it as is in the pot. You can always separate it in an individual container later.
- Cover with the Instant Pot lid. Push the yogurt function and set the time to six to eight hours. Add two more hours of fermenting time if the yogurt is not set after six hours.

How to Store
When the yogurt is set after fermenting, you can transfer it to the container separately for easier access and transport. Afterward, I store them in the fridge for up to one week.
