Easy Gimbap Recipe
Make the perfect Korean dish for your next Asian party with this quick Gimbap recipe. All you need is some cooked rice, vegetables, and a protein of your choice. Roll
everything up in some seaweed and you’re good to go! Gimbap is one of the easiest Asian recipes to make when you’re looking for a tasty, yet healthy dish. It’s so simple that you can make it with just about any combination of ingredients that you like. The challenging part is how to roll it up perfectly without any rice sticking out, but we’ll show you how.
What is Gimbap?
Gimbap (김밥) is a Korean dish made of cooked rice and other ingredients rolled up in seaweed (gim) and then sliced into bite-sized pieces. It’s similar to Japanese sushi, but
the main difference is that Gimbap is usually not made with raw fish. It originally was a snack that people could take on the go, but it has become popular as
a meal or party dish. You’ll often see Gimbap served at Korean BBQs or potlucks. The great thing about this dish is that you can use whatever ingredients you like. The most common fillings for Gimbap are cooked spam, egg omelette, pickled radish, carrots, and cucumber. But feel free to get creative and add in any other vegetables or proteins that you like. Once you’ve got your fillings prepared, it’s time to roll everything up! Easy, right?
What are the tools I need?
To make the Gimbap, all you need are some basic kitchen tools:
● A large cutting board or a clean countertop
● A sushi mat (optional but helpful)
● A sharp knife
● A bowl of water
● Gim or seaweed sheets
These tools are all available at any local Asian grocery store.
If you don’t have a sushi mat, you can use a clean kitchen towel or a piece of wax
paper. Just make sure the towel or wax paper is slightly damp so the rice doesn’t stick.
You can also roll the Gimbap without any type of mat, but it will be more difficult to get a
tight roll.
Ingredients:
2 cups spinach sautee’d
2 large carrots shredded
2 large egg scrambled
pickled radish
1 lb ground beef sautee’d
mayonnaise I used Kewpie
5 cups hot rice cook per rice cooker instruction
Shushi Nori
1/2 cup Roasted Sesame oil
Instructions:
Rice Preparation
1. First, you’ll need to cook your rice.
2. Once the rice is cooked, let it cool for a bit then add the sesame oil and salt. Mix
everything until the rice is evenly coated.
Now it’s time to start rolling!
1. Lay out one sheet of Gim on your sushi mat or clean countertop. Dip your fingers
in the bowl of water and lightly dampen the seaweed. This will help prevent the
rice from sticking.
2. Spread a thin layer of rice over the seaweed, leaving a 1-inch border around the
edge.
3. Arrange your fillings in a line down the center of the rice.
4. Roll everything up tightly, using the sushi mat to help you if needed.
5. Once it’s rolled up, lightly dampen the remaining 1-inch border with water and
finish rolling.
6. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
7. To slice the Gimbap, use a sharp knife dipped in water.
What type of rice should you use?
Sushi rice is key to making sure your Gimbap doesn’t fall apart. For best results, use short-grain rice when making Gimbap. This type of rice is sticky and will hold together well when rolled up.If you can’t find short-grain rice, sushi rice or any other type of sticky rice will work too. Just make sure to cook it according to the package instructions.
What fillings can you use to make a special Gimbap?
While the most common fillings are cucumber, carrot, and spam, you can use whatever
you like.
Some other popular fillings include the following:
- Kimchi. Kimchi is a fermented cabbage dish that is common in Korean cuisine. It’s
spicy and tangy and makes a great addition to Gimbap. Just make sure to use the
kimchi juice as well to add some extra flavor. - Tofu. If you’re looking for a vegetarian option, tofu is a great choice. You can either fry it
or leave it plain. - Cheese. Cheese is always a good idea, and it goes great with Gimbap. You can use
any type of cheese you like, but I recommend mozzarella or cheddar. - Tuna. A tuna is a great option if you want to add some protein. You can use canned
tuna or make your fresh tuna salad. Tuna contains a lot of moisture, so make sure to
drain it before adding it to your Gimbap. - Mushrooms. Mushrooms are a great vegetarian option, and they add a nice earthy
flavor to the dish. You can use any type of mushrooms you like, but I recommend
shiitake or oyster mushrooms. - Beef. Beef is another good option if you want to add some protein. You can pre-cook the beef or marinate it using bulgogi sauce. If you’re using raw beef, make sure to cook it until it’s medium-rare or it will be tough to eat. I also recommend using thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin.
The possibilities are endless! Just get creative and add in any fillings you like.
How do you make Gimbap without seaweed?
If you can’t find seaweed or don’t like the taste, you can use soy paper or rice paper instead. Just make sure to dampen the paper so it’s pliable. You can also use nori sheets, but you’ll need to cut them into strips. No matter what you use, make sure to oil it lightly so the rice doesn’t stick.
How long will Gimbap last?
- Gimbap will last for 3-4 days in the fridge. Just make sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. After that, the rice will start to get hard and theflavors will start to fade. To extend its shelf life, you can freeze it for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to eat it, just thaw it overnight in the fridge. Gimbap is a delicious and versatile dish that can be made with lots of different fillings. You can use whatever ingredients you have available, so it’s perfect for any occasion.Whether you’re looking for a quick snack or something to take to a party, Gimbap is theperfect solution. Just follow our simple recipe and you’ll be able to make your own Gimbap in no time!
