TOFU SALAD with a Filipino twist. The tofu dressing is homemade Mama Sita’s copycat Sisig mixture. Completely vegan, hi- protein and healthy.
TOFU SALAD-FILIPINO STYLE
If I can become a Vegan, this will be the food that I will be making every single day. This can be eaten as a starter menu for those folks who wants to start out the vegan life style because this Tofu Salad is just so good.
You can make this healthier by baking the Tofu, but I like it better when it’s fried because it’s crispier and firmer.
WHAT TOFU SHOULD I USE?
There are several tofu choices in your store. The Tofu difference is how much water you extract when pressing them. The more liquid you press out, the more the protein content there is.
- Soft/ Silken – This is what you use for drinks and for making vegan dips.
- Medium Tofu- slight firmer that soft tofu, you can add it in your Miso soft, and still slight soft and wiggly.
- Firm Tofu- this is firm, but easily falls apart. You can use it for vegan cheese substitute. Vegan ground meat.
- Extra Firm- this is firm that you can cube and slice it in various shape without crumbling or ruining the shape. Use this for tofu satay. Fry it, without crumbling.
Extra firm tofu is what we need for tofu salad.
TOFU SALAD HOMEMADE DRESSING
This salad dressing is inspired from what how we make tofu salad in the Philippines. We mix it with a ready made mix called Mama Sita’s . Since our store don’t carry Mama Sita’s flavoring, I opted to make my own.
WHAT IS SISIG
Sisig is a Filipino word which means to make it sour, thus this salad is sour. The tofu is coated with homemade copy cat sisig mix consisting of lemon pepper powder, onion powder and water.
COPY-CAT MAMA SITA’S SISIG MIX
I know, it’s hard to find Mama Sita’s Sisig Mixture if you don’t live in a big city so I made my own Sisig mixture. The ingredients are very simple:
- Lemon and Pepper Seasoning- use 1 tablespoon
- Onion Powder- add in 1 tablespoon
- Water – dissolving agent.
- Just mix all of the ingredients until powder is dissolve and add into the fried tofu.
WHERE CAN I BUY TOFU
You can get tofu in the refrigerated section in your store. It can be in the health section, or near the cheese section in your store.
HOW TO MAKE TOFU SALAD
- Drain the Tofu by placing it in a paper towel or cloth. Cover with paper towel or cloth and very gently press to drain fluid.
- Slice tofu into cubes and fry. Add more oil to deep fry tofu. It’s less time turning them.
- Remove the tofu from the pan and drain excess oil in paper towel.
- In small bowl, add the lemon pepper powder, onion powder and water. Mix the dressing until the powder is dissolve.
- Place ready cooked tofu and chopped onion in a deep bowl and add in the dressing.
- Gently mix until tofu is coated with the dressing.
- Refrigerate for an hour before serving.
INGREDIENTS
- Two blocks of Extra firm tofu – this tofu hold its shape when frying.
- Lemon pepper powder – this will give sour taste of the salad.
- Water- mix the lemon pepper powder with the water and mix to dissolve.
- Onion- lots of them. I use red onion to give the salad its flavor.
WHAT IS TOFU MADE OFF
Tofu is a curdled soy milk formed into small blocks. Watch this YT channel here on how it is made. This process was originated from China providing protein to locals.
HOW TOFU TASTE LIKE
Tofu taste similar to soy milk but firm. It has a consistency of firm cheese, but a bit softer. When you bite it, it feels like it can easily melt in your mouth.
COOKING TIPS
- Frying instead of baking- fry the tofu in oil and turn in all side.
- Deep fry- it’s better to use more oil and deep fry. It is more crispy, and less amount of time turning the tofu.
- Add more lemon pepper powder- yup, I like it more sour.
- Season with salt and pepper. Season according to your liking.
WHAT TO SERVE
- Serve this salad as it is, or serve it with rice. Pour in some peanut sauce if you like.
- Serve it with lettuce as wrap.
